How to Choose a Calgary Landscaper
Choosing a landscaper is not more difficult than shopping for any other major purchase. You should be clear about whether you are looking for an update to your existing landscape or you want to remove everything in place and start from scratch. When you break it down into manageable steps, you can be more clear about what you need and finding the right landscape professionals is a cinch.
What to know when hiring a landscape professional
When thinking about a landscape professional be sure to shop around and ask friends and neighbours for recommendations of companies that have done a good job. Get bids from several companies and consider both value and bottom line price. Cutting corners is not way to find a bargain so be wary of special deals. Ask for the installation date and make sure it is emailed or in writing.
Find a full service landscaper
Try to hire a landscaper who has a complete portfolio for landscaping installations . For instance one who installs paving stones, retaining walls, underground irrigation, etc. You will likely get a better price for doing all the landscaping jobs with one contractor and it is much easier to deal with one contractor rather than several.

Get your installation date in writing
When we asked people what there biggest issue was when dealing with landscapers, late installations was the biggest issue next to cost. Many landscapers told the customers that they would install their project at a certain time and in fact they waited weeks or months for the install to actually take place. In some cases the landscaper did not even show up. We recommend requesting an email from the landscaping company stating the date of installation.
Deposits and progress payments
Many landscaping companies in Calgary require that a deposit is paid before they will book your job. The deposit is usually in the range of 25-35 %. Also, a number of companies will request a progress payment as the work progresses. If you can, we recommend choosing a landscaping company who has a A + rating with the Better Businesses Bureau and does not ask for deposits or progress payments. That way the pressure is all on the company to perform and you are not taking any risk. There are reputable companies who request deposits but we still think its better and safer not to pay anything up front.
City of Calgary License
Every landscaping company that operates within the city of Calgary is required to have a City of Calgary business license
